There are three basic objectives that piston rings that they need to achieve depending on their placement on the piston.
The first ring or primary ring also called as the compression ring assists in preventing the gas from leaking out during the combustion process. The second ring or secondary ring assists the primary ring in keeping the pressure intact. The third ring also known as oil rings assists in keeping the engine cool by dissipating the oil around it. Each of these three rings have to work together optimally to give the combined functionally and a good output.
